MGMT – Kids

Released: 2009

The controversial music video for ‘Kids’ shows a child navigating a society filled with monsters. Throughout the video, a child is spooked by various monsters while his mother remains stoic and inattentive. The video excellently captures the alienated experience of being introduced to an unknown environment. The video ended up receiving a fair amount of criticism due to the amount of crying by the child in the video.

Katy Perry – E.T.

Released: 2011

In the music video for ‘E.T.’, Katy Perry is shown as an extraterrestrial floating through space. The most notable aspect of the video is the multiple “alien” type makeup Katy Perry dons for the video. Her chic dresses and haunting colored eye-contacts creates a feeling that Katy Perry is truly out of this world. The music video for ‘E.T.’ ended up winning MTV VMA awards for “Best Collaboration” and “Best Special Effects.”

Weezer – Buddy Holly

‘Buddy Holly’ shows the members of Weezer wearing 1970’s clothing while rocking out in the infamous “Arnold’s Drive-In.” The video cuts back and forth from contemporary Weezer to old “Happy Days” footage. The video ended up winning the VMA’s Best Direction, Best Editing, Best Alternative Video, and Breakthrough Video awards.
